This volume of essays has been written in honour of Jacques-Rene Rabier. The essays, by authors from seven countries on both sides of the Atlantic, were presented to Rabier on his 70th birthday (September 16, 1989) in recognition of his unique contributions to the integration of Europe, and to the evolution of social science research. Each of the contributors to this volume has drawn on the results of the Euro-Barometer surveys in their research - in most cases, on many occasions. Their existence is due to the dedicated and generous efforts of Jacques-Rene Rabier. The Euro-Barometer surveys, in turn, have contributed both inspiration and standardized survey items to several other major corss-national survey research efforts, such as Political Action surveys and the World Value surveys, carried out on all six inhabited continents. Through his encouragement, advise and enthusiastic support, Rabier has helped nourish these and numerous other resaerch projects. He may well have done more to advance the cause of cross-national survey research, than any other individual.
